It’s hard to describe the feeling of losing someone close to you, whether it’s a parent, grandparent, child, sibling, or friend. The pain of missing them can become excruciatingly raw during holidays and special occasions, no matter how many years pass since their passing. Technology has come up with ways to recreate the images of people, places, and things that have been lost over time using photography and film. But what if there was technology that could allow us to bring people back to life in full-color 3D holograms?
Why are we using Holograms?
Holograms are becoming more and more popular. They are a new technology that let us make realistic 3D images appear in thin air. Since 2015 it has been possible to have holo-consoles, similar to Holo-laptops, but like most things Holographic there is room for improvement. Today’s Holo-consoles need to be held up at eye level when used otherwise they wouldn’t look like much.
Who is this technology right for?
This technology is great for people who are constantly away from their families. It would also be beneficial to people who cannot afford to take vacations. Since you can carry your family with you everywhere, there would be no reason not to take a trip! Instead of reading old letters or flipping through old pictures, you could just call up that person and talk. This technology would benefit many military soldiers and astronauts as well. They could put a hologram in their home for when they come back from an extensive mission.
What do I need to create my own holo?
First, you’ll need some special camera software that can capture depth. Several smartphone cameras can do so (see here), but if you want to create one from scratch, you’ll need specialized hardware and software like Microsoft’s Holographic Capture Device. Next, shoot high-resolution video of whomever you want to recreate in 3D.
